Indian four-peats in Hub men's softball

Four years ago, Indian Lake trailed 7-2 in the second inning of the championship game against Rock Ridge. That was the low point since 1998 as Indian rallied for a 9-7 victory to claim the title that year and followed with back-to-back crowns in 1999 and 2000.
On Sunday at Gardner Field in Denville, Indian edged in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first and a pitchers' battle ensued between Randy Reeves and Frank Gallagher before Indian pushed three more runs across the plate in the fifth to build up a four-run advantage.
Rock Ridge answered in the top of the seventh when Keith Van blasted a gigantic homer with two mates on base to cut the margin to one run before Reeves retired the final two batters on fly balls to the outfield to give Indian Lake its fourth straight title.
Indian drew first blood quickly when Mike Reeves single and Darren Dashkowich followed with a single, putting runners on first and second before they moved up a base on a passed ball. Randy Reeves aided his own cause when he dribbled a ball slowly to first with his son Mike scoring the first run of the game on a fielder's choice play.
Reeves and Gallagher matched goose eggs over the next three innings before Indian added to its lead in the fifth. Josh Cacella singled to center and Bob King walked. Glen Knudsen, the DH, ripped a double to center, scoring Cacella and Jon Lezak went in to run for Knudsen who is hobbled by a knee brace as he is rahabbing an injury. Left fielder Bob Plucinsky followed with a two-run double down the right field line and Indian was in front 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Gallagher aided his own cause with a single to left and Billy Provost drew a base on balls, bring Van to the plate with one away. He laid into a Reeves' pitch, sending the over the left field fence with it landing in the tennis courts about 350 feet away.
"It was an awesome blow," said Dan Cacella, the Indian Lake coach who is normally the starting catcher but was sidelined with a broken ankle. "The fence in left is about 240 feet from home and is 20 feet high. It was the longest hit I have seen in a softball game and it certainly made for an exciting finish."
Defense was the key to Indian's successful defense of its title. With Matt Dunbar at the hot corner and Bon Halm playing left-center and Peter Reich in right in the 10-man defensive alignment, Reeves received great support from the men behind him.

Cedar, Indian share women's softball title

To play or not to play was the question of the weekend at Cedar Lake and Indian Lake after the two teams battled to a 16-16 standoff in a game called after six innings because of darkness on Friday evening.
Scoreless after one inning with the sun glaring in from right field, the championship game of the 2000 Hub Lakes Women's Softball League turned into a real donnybrook over the next five innings. With darkness about to halt the action, Lauren Kontje singled home a pair of runs as top-seeded Cedar Lake rallied to knot the score at 16-16 in the bottom of the sixth.
"After three days of weighing the pros and cons, we have decided to declare co-champions this season," said Lefty Medina, the chairman of the Hub Lakes women's softball program. "Several of the players went on vacation and some are off to college, so it would have been difficult to keep both teams at full strength for another game."
Cedar Lake won the regular season title with a perfect 5-0 mark with Indian in second at 4-1, dropping a 13-5 decision to Cedar in the fourth game of the seas
on. The championship game was all positive. Both teams rallied from what appeared to be hopeless situations and produced their runs. While neither team could celebrate the thrill of victory on the diamond, no players had to cope with the agony of defeat after making a crucial error. It was a game played by winners in both dugouts and the new millennium began with no losers. See complete story below....

Cedar, Indian battle to 16-16 standoff in title game halted by darkness

By Dennis Wilson
Sports In The Garden State

Cedar Lake won the regular season title with a perfect 5-0 mark while Indian finished in the runnerup slot with a 4-1 mark, dropping a 13-5 decision to Cedar in the fourth game of the season.
Assuming the visitors' role, Indian batted first. Donna Hennessey singled for the first hit of the game with one away and Tracy Hedden followed with a walk before the next two batters were retired to end the top of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Hedden, the Indian hurler, got the top three batters in the Cedar order to hit infield grounders for a 1-2-3 inning.
Indian loaded the bases in the top of the second highlighted by a single off the bat of Cheryl McCauley, but could not push a run across the plate. In the bottom of the second, Cedar's batting order found the range as Tammy Baldwin led of with a single. Amy Kolisse followed with a single and Lynn Eggert drew a base on balls to fill the sacks. Nancy Meade single home two runs. Following an out, Kontje laced a triple to right center, scoring Eggert and Meade. Kontje came around to score on a double off the bat of Maria Bates who scored on an RBI single off the bat of Kristen Meade. The uprising put Cedar in front 6-0.
With one away in the top of the third, Hennessey drilled her second single of the game to ignite a string of six straight base runners for Indian. Hedden singled and Nancy McGavin plated Hennessey with an RBI single to put Indian on the board. Betsy McGavin singled home and Hedden crossed the plate on an RBI single by McCauley. Jen Luzzi singled Nancy McGavin home with the third run of the frame. Julia Moller followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Betsy McGavin. Chris Gavin drilled a single that allowed McCauley to score and Lynn Vandervajt single home Luzzi to draw Indian within one of the lead. Jannis Savitt singled and Hennessy double home the tying and go-ahead runs to push Indian into a 7-6 lead.
In the home half of the third, Kolis singled to lead off. With two out, Nancy Meade singled home Kolis and Alison Bound followed with a single that scored Meade as Cedar edged in front 8-7.
Indian struck right back in the top of the fourth, scoring three times to regain the lead at 10-8. The McGavins, Nancy and Betsy, singled back-to-back to start the inning. Luzzi drilled a single that scored both McGavins, giving the lead back to Indian. Luzzi tallied the third run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to right by Moller.
Cedar rallied in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 10-10 but it was two outstanding defensive plays by Indian that kept the damage to a minimum. Bates led off with a single and was cut down trying to stretch it to a double by a perfect throw from Savite in left field. Kim McGinley followed with a single. When Kristyn Meade singled to left center, McGinley was nailed trying to go to third giving Indian two outs despite allowing three straight singles. Cori Eggert followed with a three-bagger that scored Meade and Baldwin doubled Eggert home to knot the score at 10-10.
In the fifth, Indian tried to break the game open, scoring six times to open up a 16-10 lead. Savite opened up with a double and scored on Hennessey's fourth hit of the game. Baldwin and Betsy McGavin singled to load the bases before McCauley walked, picking up an RBI as Hennessy crossed the plate. Luzzi followed with a single that scored Hedden and McGavin before Moller followed with a single to plate McCauley and Luzzi as Indian's outburst opened up a six-run lead.
Things quieted temporarily as Cedar failed to score in the bottom of the firth and Indian was held scoreless in the top of the sixth as the sun began to set in the west. Kristyn Meade and Cori Eggert opened the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles before Baldwin blasted a round-tripper that cut the deficit to 16-13. With one away, Lynn Eggert drilled a solo homer to narrow the gap to 16-14.
Nancy Meade and Jolyn Veres came through with another set of back-to-back singles. Kontje, who had hit the ball solid her first two times at bat, connected for the single that plated Meade and Veres to deadlock the game at 16-16, finishing with a team-high four RBIs.
That was it with darkness halting the game after six innings.
While there are precedents in various sports of the Hub Lakes League for co-champions, this is the first time that a softball season has concluded with not one, but two champions.
It was an exciting finish to the season in many ways. There were outstanding defensive plays on both sides and the batters were on target, drilling shots that created the four major explosions of the game, two by each squad. It would be difficult to single out one player for MVP honors. Hennessy's bat was busy for Indian with four hits while Baldwin and Lynn Eggert powered Cedar with homers and Kontje produced the timely hits, plating a game high four runs.
This game was all positive. Both teams rallied from what appeared to be hopeless situations and produced their runs. While neither team could celebrate the thrill of victory on the diamond, no players had to cope with the agony of defeat after making a crucial error. It was a game played by winners in both dugouts and the new millennium began with no losers.
